Licensing moves from processors to cores
To align licensing of private and cloud environments, and simplify licensing across multi-cloud infrastructures, we're moving licensing for both Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 from processors to physical cores. This change is one of several steps we're taking to evolve our server licensing to support hybrid cloud scenarios. It also aligns the servers to the common licensing denomination that's become a standard measure for capacity across environments.
In this new model, each physical server will need to be licensed
for all physical cores as shown below.
A minimum of 16 core licenses are required for each server
Licenses are available in 2-core packs
The price for eight 2-core pack licenses of Windows Server
2016 is equivalent to one 2-processor license of Windows Server 2012 R2
Additional cores can be licensed in increments of 2 cores (1
two core pack) for gradual increases in core density growth
Standard
and Datacenter Editions
Two editions are available for both products. Designed for low or no
virtualization scenarios, the Standard Edition of Windows Server 2016 and System
Center 2016 will license up to 2 VMs or 2 Hyper-V containers when all physical
cores on the server are licensed. Some new features unique to the Datacenter
Edition include an Azure-inspired networking stack, storage enhancements
including Storage Spaces Direct and Storage replica, and Shielded VMs. The
Standard Edition will continue to provide the core functionality of Windows
Server, including up to two instances of Hyper-V. The Datacenter Edition still
provides rights for unlimited VM's.
What's new with Windows
Server 2016
Windows Server 2016 is a "cloud-ready OS" that meets customers where they are
today, while introducing technology to ease the transition to cloud. It runs
traditional applications and datacenter infrastructure, and at the same time
delivers an unprecedented amount of innovation to help customers transition
workloads to a more secure, efficient and agile cloud model:
Provides advanced multi-layer security to
help prevent attacks and detect suspicious activity
Delivers a more flexible and cost-efficient
operating system for any datacenter, using software-defined compute, storage
and network features inspired by Azure
Deploy and run existing and cloud-native
applications - whether on-premises or in Microsoft Azure - using new
capabilities such as Windows Server containers, Hyper-V containers, and Nano
Server, a new minimal-footprint OS deployment option that's a more efficient
datacenter host and the perfect lightweight OS for native cloud
applications.
System Center 2016 makes it easy to deploy, configure and manage virtualized,
software-defined datacenter and hybrid cloud infrastructures. It supports
everything from provisioning the physical and virtual infrastructure to IT
process and service management, with:
Faster time to value with simple
installation, in-place upgrades, and automated workflows
Efficient operations with improvements in
performance and usability of all System Center components
Greater heterogeneity and cloud management
with broader support for LAMP stack and VMware, including monitoring
resources and services in Azure and Amazon Web Services
