FLEX BUILDER 3
Create engaging, cross-platform rich Internet applications

ADOBE FLEX BUILDER 3

Flex is a highly productive, free open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems. While Flex applications can be built using only the free Flex SDK, developers can use Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3 software to dramatically accelerate development.

Adobe Flex Builder 3 accelerates Flex application development. It is an Eclipse based development tool enabling intelligent coding, interactive step-through debugging, and visual design of the user interface layout, appearance, and behavior of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). Flex Builder 3 includes the complete Flex framework, including compilers, a component library, and debuggers.

Flex Builder 3 is available in Standard and Professional editions. Both editions allow import of assets from Adobe Creative Suite® 3 software, making it easy for designers and developers to work together. Flex Builder 3 Professional further adds powerful data visualization capabilities, the new Advanced Datagrid, memory and performance profilers, and support for automated functional testing for developing business-critical applications.

Eclipse based IDE:

  • Code hinting, interactive debugging
  • Visual UI design and behaviors
  • Import assets from Adobe CS3

Professional edition adds:

  • Memory and Performance Profilers
  • Charting components, advanced data grid
  • Automated functional testing support

Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3 Standard software is an Eclipse™ based development tool enabling intelligent coding; interactive step-through debugging; and visual design of user interface layout, appearance, and behavior of RIAs. The ability to import assets from Adobe Creative Suite® 3 makes it easy for designers and developers to work together.

Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3 Professional software is an Eclipse™ based development tool enabling intelligent coding; interactive step-through debugging; and visual design of user interface layout, appearance, and behavior of business-critical RIAs. The ability to import assets from Adobe Creative Suite® 3 makes it easy for designers and developers to work together. Powerful testing tools, including an interactive debugger, memory and performance profilers, and automated functional testing support, speed development and lead to higher performing applications.

  • Flex applications provide a highly interactive experience, seamlessly supporting the use of integrated media.
  • Flex applications run identically in all major browsers and operating systems and can now run on the desktop with Adobe AIR™.
  • Flex provides a structured, proven, open-source development framework for the delivery of predictable, long-term RIA solutions, making Flex the preferred choice for web sites as well as intranet and enterprise applications.

Main features

Top reasons to buy Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3:
  • Powerful coding tools—Take advantage of editors for MXML, ActionScript™, and CSS; syntax coloring; statement completion; code collapse; interactive step-through debugging; and more.
  • Rich visual layout—Visually design and preview user interface layout, appearance, and behavior using a rich library of built-in components. Create or extend those components easily if you need to.
  • Interactive data visualization—Create data dashboards and interactive data analysis by simply dragging and dropping a chart type and linking it to a data source using the Flex® Charting library.
  • Skinning and styling—Customize the appearance of an application using CSS and graphical property editors to quickly set the most commonly used properties and preview the results in Design view.
  • Integration with Creative Suite® 3—Import ready-to-use creative assets directly into Flex quickly and easily with new Flex Skin Design extensions for Adobe Flash®, Illustrator®, Photoshop®, and Fireworks® software.
  • Code refactoring—Find references to classes, variables, and methods, and rename them easily.
  • Native support for Adobe AIR—Build desktop applications with the same skills and codebase as your RIAs with new desktop components and Adobe AIR development tools.
  • Powerful testing tools—Use memory and performance profilers to investigate memory use and analyze where applications are using resources. Automated functional testing support, now included in Flex Builder Professional, enables regression testing.
  • Advanced data services—Invoke web services or request XML data via HTTP using a rich, built-in library of data access services. Use open-source BlazeDS to easily connect applications to back-end services, leveraging Remoting and AMF, a binary, high-performance HTTPbased data transport. You can also add real-time data push and pub/sub messaging.
  • Open-source framework—Beginning with Flex 3, the entire Flex framework is now available as an open-source project. Flex Remoting and Flex Messaging are also available as open source in BlazeDS.

Top reasons to upgrade to Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3:

  • Native support for Adobe AIR—Create desktop applications with Adobe AIR more quickly. Flex® 3 introduces new desktop components and incorporates Adobe AIR development tools, enabling you to build desktop applications with the same skills and codebase as your RIAs.
  • Code refactoring—Find references to classes, variables, and methods, and rename them easily.
  • Profilers and automated testing*—Use the memory profiler to investigate and tweak how applications consume memory. Run the performance profiler to analyze where applications are using resources, and find inefficiencies that could be improved by rewriting or breaking up functions. Automated functional testing support is now included in Adobe® Flex® Builder™ 3 Professional.
  • SWF size reduction—Leverage a new persistent framework caching feature in Adobe Flash® Player to greatly reduce the size of a Flex application SWF. The Flex framework is cached the first time any Flex application is used and is ready for reuse with all other Flex applications, regardless of source domain.
  • New and improved data visualization components—Enhance data visualization using the new Advanced DataGrid*, which includes grouping and summarization plus improved rendering options. Charts* include new interaction support, a drawing API, and multiple axis support.
  • Improved skinning and styling workflow—Use new import wizards to consume assets from Creative Suite® 3 products. Design view now supports rendering of skins and styles, enabling designers and developers to update properties and visualize how they affect each skin without rebuilding.
  • Multiple SDK support—Use Flex Builder 3 to create applications for both the Flex 2 and Flex 3 SDK.
  • Improved project workflows—Get started quickly with project wizards for PHP and ASP.NET. Improved project portability support enables developers to share projects and settings more easily.
  • Integration with Creative Suite 3—Import ready-to-use creative assets directly into Flex quickly and easily with new Flex Skin Design extensions for Flash, Illustrator®, Photoshop®, and Fireworks® software.
  • Web service introspection—Retrieve a WSDL and generate ActionScript™ proxies to make calls and serialize or deserialize strongly typed objects. Flex Builder 3 includes new code hinting for making web service calls and dealing with responses.
  • Improved browser integration—The Flex-Ajax Bridge (FABridge), used to expose Flex applications to scripting in the browser, is now included in Flex 3. A new BrowserManager component allows access to the browser URL, making it easy to add deep linking support, which is useful for bookmarking. New wizards expose Flex functionality to JavaScript.

* Available in Flex Builder 3 Professional only.
