Microsoft Exchange 2016

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016
Work smarter, anywhere, with business email on your own servers.

Exchange Server 2016 lets you accomplish more across phones, tablets, desktop, and the Web.

Exchange Server 2016 lets you accomplish more with rich Outlook experiences on phones, tablets, desktop, and the Web. Integration with Outlook, SharePoint, and OneDrive for Business helps you experience collaboration better when receiving, editing, and sharing documents without ever having to leave Outlook. New search capabilities deliver faster performance and more accurate results. Inbox enhancements in Outlook 2016 and Outlook on the web, such as inline previews for URLs and inline video, help you stay focused and productive. A simplified architecture brings new levels of reliability with automated repair and faster recovery. Expanded data loss prevention, easier auditing, and faster and more reliable eDiscovery help your organization comply with legal requirements.

Exchange Server 2016 has just two server roles:

  • Mailbox server role – this role will consolidate the Mailbox and Client Access roles from Exchange Server 2013. Compared to Exchange Server 2010 this role consolidates all of the functions of the Client Access, Mailbox, Hub Transport, and Unified Messaging server roles. The Mailbox server role in Exchange Server 2016 is the only mandatory server role, and the consolidation reinforces the recommended practice since Exchange Server 2010 to deploy Exchange as a multi-role server instead of deploying individual roles to separate servers.
  • Edge Transport server role – this role will be much the same as Edge Transport in previous versions of Exchange, designed to sit in perimeter networks and provide secure inbound and outbound mail flow for the organization. Edge Transport servers are not mandatory.

Exchange Server 2016 licensing

Learn about your options for licensing Exchange Server 2016. For information about prerequisites for licenses, see Exchange Server 2016 Prerequisites.

Server licenses

With this license type, a license must be assigned for each instance of the server software that is being run. There are two server editions:
  • Standard: designed for the mailbox needs of small to midsize organizations. Also appropriate for non-mailbox roles in a larger Exchange deployment. This edition supports 1 to 5 mailbox databases.
  • Enterprise: designed for larger organizations that may require a greater number of mailbox databases. This edition supports 1 to 100 mailbox databases.

Client access licenses (CALs)

With this license type, a CAL is required for each user or device that accesses the server software. There are two types of CALs for Exchange, both of which work with either edition of the server:
  • Standard: designed to help users be more productive from virtually any platform, browser, or mobile device, with features in Exchange Server 2016 that help your users be productive no matter where they are—while helping protect your organization's data.  To enable Standard CAL features for a user, the user must be licensed with the Standard CAL.
  • Enterprise: designed to allow organizations to reduce the cost and complexity of meeting compliance requirements with new integrated archiving functionality and information protection capabilities, while also helping you cut costs by replacing legacy voice mail systems with Unified Messaging. The Enterprise CAL is sold as an add-on to the Standard CAL—to enable Enterprise CAL features, the user must be licensed with one Standard CAL plus one Enterprise CAL.
The following table provides a detailed feature breakdown for each CAL
