With the release of SBS 2011 Standard, and it now being fully available to purchase and deploy, I am getting a lot of questions about what is new other than the obvious base and integrated applications updates. Here is a quick summary of some of the updates over previous versions

It also provides the same core set of features that are familiar to Windows SBS customers. However, Windows SBS 2011 Standard also delivers a variety of new and updated features that can help make it easier for small businesses to back-up their data, collaborate, and share information. The key features in Windows SBS 2011 Standard enable small businesses to:

• Share documents from a central location
• Recover files with automatic backup if the files are accidentally lost
• Organize and access business information from the office and from remote locations
• Run compatible business software and applications

The product technologies in SBS 2011 Standard include:

• Windows Server 2008 R2. Provides the core foundation of SBS 2011. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the most flexible and robust Windows Server operating system to date.
• Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. Introduces advanced email and calendar functionality to SBS 2011 Standard. Exchange Server 2010 delivers a seamless end-user collaboration experience and robust security features.
• Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Foundation. Is a versatile technology that businesses of all sizes can use to increase the efficiency of business processes and improve team productivity. With tools for collaboration that help people stay connected across organizational and geographic boundaries, Windows SharePoint Services gives people access to information they need.

The optional SBS 2011 Premium Add-on includes a licensed copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard technologies and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition for Small Business, providing customers and partners with a comprehensive data management and analysis solution.

Microsoft  Windows Small Business Serveristä julkaistaan tammikuussa uusi versio ja samalla poistuvat SBS 2008 tuotekoodit volyymihinnastosta.

Uuden version myötä lisen­sointiin tulee muutoksia. Jatkossa SBS Standardin päälle on saatavilla ns. Add-on lisenssi SBS Premium-versioon. Add-on lisenssillä pyritään saamaan joustavuutta lisensointiin niille asiakkaille, jotka haluavat siirtyä Standard-versiosta Premiumiin. Mikäli asiakas siis haluaa ottaa käyttöön SBS Standardin mutta haluaa mahdollisesti tulevaisuudessa siirtyä SBS Premium-versioon, niin tämä on mahdollista Add-on lisensseillä. Tällöin Add-on lisenssit tulee hankkia sekä serverille että CALeille. SBS Standard ja Premium on rajattu 75 käyt­täjälle.

Myöhemmin keväällä julkaistaan uutena tuotteena SBS Essentials -paketointi, joka on rajattu 25 käyt­tä­jälle. SBS Essentials serverilisenssin mukana tulevat CALit, eli siihen ei tarvita erikseen CAL-lisenssejä. Myös Essentials-versioon on saatavilla Add-on lisenssit SBS Premiumiin.

Huom! SBS 2011 Essentials ja Standard –versiot ovat asennettavissa yhdelle palvelimelle ja SBS 2011 Premium kahdelle palvelimelle.
