Corel has completed the acquisition of the Roxio® business from Rovi Corporation. With this deal, Corel has expanded its product portfolio to include Roxio’s broad range of digital media and security solutions, including Roxio Creator®, the industry’s most popular digital media suite and Roxio® Toast®, the leading media conversion software on the Mac® platform.

Corel now adds the Roxio product line, including the following well-known products, to its portfolio:

• Roxio Creator® – Software to enhance, preserve, capture and share your digital media
• Roxio® Toast® – The ultimate multi-media toolkit for your Mac
• Roxio® Game Capture – Software and hardware solution to record your console gameplay

With this acquisition, Corel will take advantage of its well-established global infrastructure to dramatically broaden distribution of Roxio products into new international markets. In addition, the company will draw upon the complementary video, photo, audio, and disc burning technologies found in both Roxio and Corel software to give users even more capabilities and further enhance Corel’s overall product portfolio. Corel also sees significant opportunities in combining the strengths of Corel’s and Roxio’s established retail and direct sales channels and large customer bases.

Roxio CinePlayer 5 is a DVD player software program that runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. CinePlayer acts very similar to Windows Media Player but with better video resolution and audio quality. Made by Roxio, CinePlayer 5 offers some of the best DVD and media playback of any software on the market.

CinePlayer 5 sticks to the basics with features. The player offers all the standard controls you’d find on a DVD player: auto-resume, subtitles, picture adjustment etc. For most consumers, the standard controls are perfectly fine. Users that want hyper-customizing of software should definitely look elsewhere. CinePlayer 5 is very plug-n-play.

The program is ridiculously simple to install and just as easy to use. Navigating the software shouldn’t be a problem for those familiar with standard DVD players. My one complaint with usability is that users can’t customize their navigation shortcuts. Some programs allow you to create your own keyboard shortcuts. For example, users hit ‘p’ on their keyboard and the video pauses. A feature like this could come in handy but the CinePlayer’s controls are fine.

Video quality is the reason to buy CinePlayer 5. Users have plenty of options to tweak display resolution until the image looks fantastic. CinePlayer offers an auto-adjust option that also works beautifully. Playing a DVD through CinePlayer 5 gives you some of the best video resolution available.

Audio quality in previous versions of CinePlayer has been mediocre to poor. But Roxio has made major improvements to this new player. The software now decodes Dolby 5.1 surround sound which makes the movie much more enjoyable. Users with headphones and surround sound will be very impressed how real the experience feels. The audio does have one weakness: it does not offer support for SRS TruSurround XT. TruSurround is the wave of the future and the best surround system available today. If CinePlayer 5 supported this format audio quality would be much better.

CinePlayer 5 recognizes that it’s biggest strength is video quality and audio quality. As such, it doesn’t offer many extra features like custom skins to appease customers. It’s focused on providing consumers with what matters: amazing picture and sound. With that said, the CinePlayer 5 does needs more options for customizing video and audio. They rely too heavily on their auto-adjust settings which are great, but they could still be improved through tweaking.
